NO-FACE

(No Dialogue)

EXT – FOREST, DAY

TWO BOYS, maybe eight and eleven, amble along in deep discussion. At least one holds a camera. A LITTLE GIRL, maybe seven, follows after them. She collects flowers or rocks from the ground and tries to show them to the boys who wave her off an ignore her. They eye her over their shoulders and when she is not looking try to walk faster. She keeps up with them anyway.

THE BOYS begin to speak with more serious faces as THE GIRL gathers her trinkets around them. They begin to look for large, thick sticks on the ground. THE GIRL notices and asks them about it. THE BOYS begin to gesture in answer, describing a large beast with great big jaws that lives in the dark places of the woods. THE BOYS are a bit frightened as they describe it and THE LITTLE GIRL is really afraid. She sticks close to them now, she is clingy.

All have their attentions drawn to a thicket now, there has been some sound. THE LITTLE GIRL grabs onto one of her brothers, but they wave her off and approach the thicket. She grabs onto them again but they get angry. They point to the girl and to the spot where they are standing. The little girl protests but they seem to threaten her and she concedes.

THE BOYS move off into the thicket and the little girl is left alone in the woods. Behind her a creature moves in the shadows.

There is a moment when she realizes something is behind her but doesn’t have the courage to turn and look. Then she RUNS, but trips on a log and FALLS. She screams when she sees it looming over her.

THE MONSTER is a black beast that blends with the shadows, but has a staring WHITE FACE that is somehow placed wrong on its head.

THE MONSTER reaches down to the ground and picks a rock up in its claws. It reaches it out to the LITTLE GIRL. THE LITTLE GIRL stares. THE MONSTER tries again with a different rock. Finally, the LITTLE GIRL reaches out a trembling hand and takes the offering.

THE MONSTER looks content. Slowly the LITTLE GIRL reaches out and touches the MONSTER’s face. It is one piece, like bone. The MONSTER soaks up her touch.

The MONSTER reaches out a claw and brushes a tear of the LITTLE GIRL’s check. The LITTLE GIRL smiles.

The MONSTER inspects her. It is fascinated with the sequins (or whatever) on her skirt. The LITTLE GIRL laughs at it and tippy toes to offer it interesting rocks. The MONSTER is attentive as she shows it all the rocks she can find.

The MONSTER reaches its claws around her and lifts her into a fallen tree where she can sit eye to eye with it.

THE BOYS climb out of the thicket. They see the MONSTER on the ground and the LITTLE GIRL in a tree.

The BOYS scream and run towards the LITTLE GIRL. One BOY picks up a big stick and jumps between the MONSTER and the LITTLE GIRL. The other BOY just tackles it.

The MONSTER opens a jaw under its face and roars. They fight.

The MONSTER devours both BOYS.

The MONSTER lays bloated on the forest floor. Inside its STOMACH, movement can be seen, as if the BOYS are still struggling inside it. Their MUFFLED VOICES can be heard.

The LITTLE GIRL climbs down from the tree. The MONSTER offers her a rock. The LITTLE GIRL picks up a large sharp stick and attacks it. The MONSTER HISSES and bares its TEETH, but the LITTLE GIRL keeps attacking.

The MONSTER moves clumsily because of its bloated belly. It THREATENS the LITTLE GIRL with its JAWS and CLAWS but never strikes her. The LITTLE GIRL lands blow after blow.

The LITTLE GIRL stabs it in the breast and the MONSTER bleeds BLACK BLOOD. The MONSTER cowers and makes helpless gestures but the LITTLE GIRL keeps attacking.

Finally, the MONSTER rolls over and spits up the BOYS.

The LITTLE GIRL watches as the MONSTER flees into the woods, holding it HEART.

The BOYS rush up to her, HUG her and make sure she is okay. She HUGS the BOYS back. She is CRYING, but not repentant.

The BOYS and the LITTLE GIRL leave the forest. The LITTLE GIRL turns a solemn and tear streaked face and STARES over her shoulder as they leave.

This screen play should make for sound editing we can handle, however much we want to, and gives us the opportunity to make a really great creature. It was written for E. H., but since Lyconpictus will probably be playing the monster in most shots, we might want to go for the smallest kids we can find so that the monster looks bigger. The reason it was written for E. H., is that she is really cute, but can make an excellent Sigourney Weaver face. That is the point of the story. She had to do what she had to do, but the monster was gentle and the little girl was violent. You are supposed to wonder at the end – which was the monster?
